Sarina Wiegman believes England Women ‘have to step up more’ despite Arnold Clark Cup triumph

England Women manager Sarina Wiegman has urged her side to continue improving despite successfully defending their Arnold Clark Cup crown.

Wiegman’s side beat Belgium 6-1 on Wednesday at Ashton Gate to make it three wins out of three in the invitational tournament.

After the match, however, Wiegman told reporters that it was “nice to win” the Arnold Clark Cup but England “have to step up more because the World Cup will be more of a challenge”.

“Yes it’s very nice to win, it was a good game with lots of goals but we conceded one and we didn’t like that,” the 51-year-old said to ITV Sport.

“We played well all over the pitch and it was good preparation for the team.

“We are in a good place and the competition in the team is really strong.

“The depth of the team is really good. We still have five months to go and the games were good.

“Moving forward we have a lot of chats with the team but we know we have to step up more because the World Cup will be more of a challenge.”

The Dutch manager also commented on the performances of Lauren James and Chloe Kelly, who won the player of the tournament and top goalscorer awards respectively.
