Sabine Lisicki gets wildcard for Charleston qualifying

Sabine Lisicki has received a wildcard into the qualifying of the Credit One Charleston Open and will compete over the weekend for a spot in the main draw.

The former world No.12 Lisicki, whose career has been hampered by numerous injuries, will compete in the qualifying event of the Credit One Charleston Open during Family Weekend. The German will try to earn a spot in her first WTA 500 main draw in four years.

The North America’s largest women’s-only tennis tournament is a very familiar place for the 33-year-old Lisicki, as she won her first WTA title there, beating Caroline Wozniacki in the 2009 final. Moreover, Lisicki’s last match in the main draw of a WTA 500 event was in the first round of the 2019 Charleston Open against Sofia Kenin.

The last injury that Lisicki sustained was a major anterior cruciate ligament tear in November 2020, at the Upper Austria Ladies Open. “I broke everything in my knee that can be broken,” the 2013 Wimbledon runner-up described the injury. Following surgery and a lengthy rehab, despite the injury being so serious that “99.9 percent of the time you wouldn’t return to professional sports”, Lisicki started building her comeback in May 2022 at minor clay-court events.
