Ryne Sandberg cancer diagnosis: MLB community ‘rallying around’ Cubs Hall of Famer

The baseball world received tough news about one of its Hall of Famers on Monday. 

Former Cubs infielder Ryne Sandberg announced today that he has been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in a post on his personal Instagram. 

Sandberg, affectionately known by fans as “Ryno”, was a 10-time All-Star and won nine consecutive Golden Gloves for his defensive efforts. After playing 13 games with the Phillies to open his career, he was traded to the Cubs and spent 15 seasons at Wrigley Field from 1982-94 and ’96-97. While there, he totaled 282 home runs and 344 stolen bases. 

He won the National League MVP in 1984 after leading the MLB in triples and runs scored that season, batting .314 with 19 home runs in the process.

“To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, extended Baseball Family, the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I want to share some personal news,” Sandberg said in his Instagram post on Monday. “Last week, I learned that I have been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. I have begun treatment, and I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends.
