Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan appear to have another smash hit on their hands with their new film “Sinners,” but this isn’t the first time they’ve teamed up together.
The two are, in-fact, becoming something of the 2020s version of Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, having worked together numerous times over this past decade, including 2015’s “Creed,” which kickstarted a whole new extension of the iconic “Rocky” film franchise. In it, Jordan starred as Adonis, the son of Apollo Creed, who just so happened to be Rocky’s (Sylvester Stallone) longtime Rival. Looking back, “Creed” was an interesting way to approach continuing the series, as the “Rocky” franchise had been in limbo for a nearly a decade at that point.
You see, prior to the 2015 release of “Creed,” the last attempt at a “Rocky” movie was 2006’s “Rocky Balboa,” which received mixed reviews from critics at the time of its release. An emotional film that blended the past and present, “Balboa” told the tale of a long-retired Rocky Balboa who had sense transitioned into running a small Italian restaurant named after his late wife.
