BOSTON — Rob Refsndyer walked into the media interview room on Saturday ahead of a doubleheader against the Rays and offered up some self-deprecating humor.
“I thought this place was reserved for everyday players,” he said with a smile as chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom sat next to him.
Earlier in the day, the Red Sox announced a one-year deal with Refsnyder with a team option for 2025. Refsnyder is set to make $1.85 million for the 2024 season and the club option for 2025 is worth $2 million, a source told The Athletic.
The timing of the announcement before a Saturday doubleheader against the Rays seemed to line up with Refsnyder’s unorthodox career path. There have been a lot of unexpected turns for the 32-year-old outfielder over the past seven years, in which he’s played for six teams.
But Refsnyder has finally found his footing with the Red Sox, even if it is as a fourth outfielder. He’s grateful for the job security, something he’s had all too infrequently in his career.
