Dr. Leonard Moore recalled the first Black Student Athlete Summit in 2015 being attended by 70 students.
This year’s summit had more than 1,500 attendees representing 185 schools.
The 2023 Black Student Athlete Summit took place May 21-24 at USC, bringing students nationwide together to expose them to career opportunities and networking. This year’s summit also featured some well-known names in the sports industry. Klutch Sports Group founder and LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul was among the invited panelists, as was Matt Barnes, a 14-year NBA veteran and a 2017 NBA champion who has transitioned to a career in media.
The original idea behind the summit was to support athletes who would not have professional sports careers as they transitioned into the workforce. It was something Moore noticed was needed in the late 1990s as a graduate student at Ohio State. He’d later move on to work at LSU and is currently at the University of Texas, and he’s consulted with numerous schools on ways to support Black student-athletes.
Thank you to all who were in attendance last week at the 2023 Black Student Athlete Summit in Los Angeles! 1500+ attendees doubled last year’s attendance in Houston. Let’s keep building this thing together. And also thank you to @usc_athletics and @USC…
