South Carolina coach Dawn Staley demanded an apology from CBS Radio after JR Jackson, known as JR Sport Brief, called South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso “the giant Brazillian woman that knocks people over” in an ad read on the “CBS Sports Minute” on Thursday.
“I’m more excited for the women’s tournament,” he said during an Audacy sports minute commentary segment. “I’m ready for Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark and the giant Brazilian woman that knocks people over.”
Staley responded by saying she “never thought I’d hear one of my players described in such an offensive way.
“I’m not sitting this one out. Kamilla deserves an apology,” the coach wrote on social media before tagging CBS Sports and the affiliate station that aired the segment, 107.5 The Game. The station broadcasts to Columbia, S.C., where the university is located.
Jackson apologized to Cardoso and South Carolina, taking responsibility for his wording and saying Cardoso “deserves better.”
“As I was sharing my excitement for this year’s Women’s NCAA Tournament and watching some of the game’s brightest stars, I referred to University of South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso by only her height and ethnicity,” Jackson wrote. “I genuinely regret my words, and I sincerely apologize…
