Radio DJ Adele Roberts has announced on social media that she’ll be running this year’s London Marathon, having only undergone life-saving bowel cancer surgery 18 months ago. She received the news that she was cancer-free in the summer of 2022.
Adele, who now has a stoma bag that she affectionately refers to as Audrey, announced over the weekend that she would be taking on the landmark event with only 12 weeks of marathon training under her belt after suffering from Covid at the start of the year.
Not only has she had to get back into running after an illness, but she’s also still recovering from her bowel cancer surgery. Adele has a stoma bag because her small intestine has been ‘brought to the outside of [her] body while it heals’, so she currently doesn’t have full use of her colon. She’ll have extra challenges to contend with concerning hydration and fuelling as a result, but is still determined to take on the challenge.
This will be Adele’s third London Marathon, but her first after being diagnosed with stage 2 bowel cancer two years ago, having undergone chemotherapy therapy as well as major bowel surgery. It marks an incredible recovery, and is a very brave feat.
