Qinwen Zheng was the last home player left in the draw at the Zhengzhou Open. The Chinese no. 1 player ensured that she rode this momentum all the way to hauling the title on Sunday. Against Barbora Krejcikova, Zheng posted a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win after almost two-and-a-half-hours of play.

Zheng secured the first break of the match but handed it right back to her opponent. From 2-0 down in the set, Krejcikova won the next six games in a row to get the lead in the match. The second set was more one-sided. Only this time in favour of Zheng who was able to push the match into the decider.

In the final set, Zheng once again gained the upper hand with a break but handed it back right away. A second break on Krejcikova’s serve in the ninth game gave Zheng the chance to serve out the match and this time, she didn’t cede her advantage back.

The Asian swing’s been going quite well for Qinwen Zheng. Earlier, away from the WTA Tour, she won the Asian Games that were also held in her native, China, in the city of Hangzhou. Winning the gold medal there also meant that Zheng had claimed an Olympic berth for herself, at the…
