Qatar to host FIBA men’s World Cup in 2027

LOS ANGELES — Qatar is going to host another World Cup. Hoops, this time.

FIBA, the international governing body for basketball, announced that Doha, Qatar would host the 2027 men’s World Cup. The Middle Eastern nation just hosted the soccer World Cup — the world’s largest sporting event — last fall.

Additionally, FIBA said Berlin, Germany would host the 2026 women’s World Cup. The 2022 women’s World Cup, in Australia, was won by Team USA. Spain is the defending men’s World Cup champion.

The announcements, made in Manila, Philippines, come one day before the highly anticipated draw for the 2023 men’s cup, set for Southeast Asia this summer.

Team USA, which will play all of its ‘23 Cup games in the Philippines, will likely draw a group of some combination of Greece, Italy, Germany, Iran, Finland, New Zealand, Jordan and Angola.

There are other two host cities for the ’23 Cup, Okinawa, Japan, and Jakarta, Indonesia. Knockout stages will be held in the Philippines.

In announcing Doha as the host for the ‘27 Cup, FIBA officials pointed to the advantage of having the entire tournament in one city. This year’s men’s cup is in three countries, and the 2019 Cup in China took place in numerous cities all over the massive country. Team USA played in four Chinese…
