Putintseva upsets Swiatek in Wimbledon third round

Date:

World No.35 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan stunned Wimbledon with a 3-6 6-1 6-2 upset over top seed Iga Swiatek, marking her first victory against the Pole in five career meetings and ending Swiatek’s 21-match winning streak.

Playing in the third round of Wimbledon for the first time after five second-round exits, Putintseva staged a major upset. The Birmingham champion overcame a first-set loss to storm back and completely dismantle Swiatek’s game, delivering a performance as powerful as a category 4 hurricane.

In a 36-minute second set, Putintseva won her first set ever against Swiatek by serving her a breadstick. Embracing her newfound momentum, she began the third set with a love break and continued to dominate, securing a double break for a 4-0 lead. Serving for victory at 5-2, Putintseva converted her third match point, kicking out the five-time Grand Slam champion with a commanding performance.

In the fourth round, Putintseva’s opponent will be 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko. Their head-to-head record is 2-2, but this will be their first meeting on grass.
