Paris Saint-Germain have cancelled a fundraising gala event due to the ongoing medical situation regarding goalkeeper Sergio Rico.
Rico, 29, sustained serious injuries after being hit by a mule cart and a runaway horse at a pilgrimage in his native Spain on Sunday. El Rocio, which takes place in Almonte, Huelva, in the province of Andalucia, involves a procession that includes people walking, riders on horseback and carts.
PSG’s gala, the seventh annual event of its kind, had been scheduled for Tuesday night and was to raise funds to finance goodwill projects in the French capital. Players from the men’s and women’s football teams — as well as PSG’s other sports — and club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi were due to attend.
Following Sunday’s accident, Rico was taken to the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville by helicopter.
A statement from the hospital at Tuesday lunchtime read: “There have been no significant changes in Sergio Rico’s state of health over the last 24 hours.
“The patient remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocio, after suffering a cranioencephalic traumatism. He is being treated by specialists in Intensive Care Medicine and continues to be under sedation.
