Since rugby sevens debuted at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, a U.S. rugby team has never placed better than fifth.
Until now. The American women defeated Great Britain in the quarterfinals yesterday to clinch a place in today’s semifinals — and a shot at a medal.
The U.S. will play New Zealand, the reigning gold medal team, in the first semifinal. The winner moves on to the gold medal match against the winner of Canada versus Australia, who play in the other semifinal. The gold medal game will take place at 1:45 p.m. ET, and the bronze medal game is at 1 p.m. ET.
Rugby sevens is quick: Seven players play two seven-minute halves.
