Donna Vekic was lost for words about her huge victory over Coco Gauff but couldn’t say much about the American’s dispute with the chair umpire but added that she also felt wronged in one of the calls earlier in the set – but just moved on.
On Tuesday, Vekic continued her big summer after upsetting world No. 2 Gauff 7-6 (7) 6-2 in the Paris Olympics round-of-16 to reach her maiden Olympic quarterfinal.
Although Vekic was coming off a Wimbledon semifinal run, there was no doubt that 2023 US Open champion Gauff was the favorite to win their Olympic match. But the 21st-ranked Croatian came out playing a very aggressive and courageous tennis, which led to a huge result.
“Emotional madness, I have no other words. Gauff plays amazing tennis all the time, especially on this surface which suits her better than me. This is my big success… Definitely in the Top 3 victories in my career. Coco on earth, but this is my biggest victory in my career,” Vekic told Sportske Novosti after the match.
Today, Vekic plays against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk for a place in the semifinal in Paris.
Vekic asked about Gauff’s complaints: They didn’t call out one of her serves, but what now?
