One of the most controversial figures in U.S. sports history has died, as the family of O.J. Simpson announced the Hall of Fame football player’s death  Wednesday after a battle with cancer.

Simpson first reached fame on the gridiron. He was a standout running back at USC where he won a Heisman Trophy before embarking on an 11-year career in the NFL. 

However, most know Simpson for his involvement in the murder trial of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. The case is one of the most popular in U.S. history, given Simpson’s celebrity status and the extensive media coverage of the trial.

The murder trial remains one of the most contentious topics in history, and with the news of Simpson’s death, the entire case surely is to be brought up again.
