NWSL commissioner talks media rights, San Diego stadium debate and championship ticket sales

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman was in Seattle on Friday night for Megan Rapinoe’s OL Reign send-off match as the Reign faced off in a meaningful clash with the Washington Spirit with playoff spots and seeding on the line. And on Friday night, OL Reign set a new NWSL attendance record, with 34,130 at Lumen Field for Rapinoe’s final home game of the regular season.

Standing on the field pregame with a new NWSL attendance record crowd of 34,130 around her, Berman focused largely on Rapinoe’s legacy. But the league commissioner stepped aside for a brief one-on-one interview with The Athletic for some quick hits on league news items from the past week and looked ahead to the NWSL championship next month.

Stadium snafu in San Diego?

There has been a bit of back and forth via media quotes from San Diego Wave head coach Casey Stoney and San Diego FC CEO Tom Penn over the new MLS team’s use of Snapdragon Stadium when the team starts play in 2025.
