The 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is two months away, and the U.S. women’s national team will be among the contenders to win the tournament. Whether the U.S. can build upon the successes of previous sides is still to be decided, but there is no doubt that the future of the national team is as promising as it has ever been.

That’s partly because young American players are thriving in the National Women’s Soccer League like never before. Each year, numerous rookies are making an impact. In 2021, Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman made her mark with some sensational performances. Last year, San Diego Wave defender Naomi Girma and Portland Thorns midfielder Sam Coffey settled in as if they were veterans at this level. So far this season, Angel City forward Alyssa Thompson is standing out, scoring a wonderful goal in every other game she plays.
