No. 20 Colorado upsets No. 1 LSU in season opener: Why it isn’t a huge surprise

No. 20 Colorado stunned top-ranked LSU 92-78 in their season-opening Hall of Fame Series game Monday night in Las Vegas.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Buffaloes were led by senior guard Frida Formann’s 27 points, five rebounds and five assists, along with junior Aaronette Vonleh’s 24 points, six rebounds and four assists.
  • Freshman Mikaylah Williams led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points, while preseason All-American Angel Reese finished with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting and 12 rebounds.
  • LSU becomes the fourth defending champion in women’s Division I history to drop its season opener and the first since 1995-96 (UConn), according to ESPN Stats & Info.

This shouldn’t be a huge surprise

After a wildly successful offseason that saw LSU bring in the top-ranked high-school class in the country as well as two of the nation’s best transfers, Kim Mulkey was clear about what should be expected from her team. “We’re not going to go undefeated,” she said Thursday when she met with the media prior to leaving for Las Vegas for the season opener.
