USC women’s basketball did the unthinkable Sunday, pulling off a 55-46 upset of No. 2 Stanford.
The win was the Trojans’ first over Stanford since 2014, when they beat the Cardinal in the Pac-12 tournament.
“I just thought we really took care of business this weekend, which is the understatement of the century,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “Stanford is so good. They’re No. 2 in the country. I thought we executed the game plan, were super tough and made plays the whole game. I haven’t even looked at the stat sheet, because who cares, right?”
Entering the contest, Stanford had a winning streak of 51 consecutive games against unranked opponents, the longest active streak in Division I. USC snapped that streak and also held the Cardinal to their fewest points in a game since 2017.
The Trojans defense held Stanford to just four points in the first quarter, a low for the Cardinal in any single quarter this season.
Stanford’s Cameron Brink had 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Haley Jones had just eight points as well as 12 rebounds.
