No. 1 seed Coco Gauff has just suffered a shock round-of-16 loss at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, while second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka routinely got the job done to reach the quarterfinal.
Gauff, who played on clay last week at the Paris Olympics, didn’t look like her usual self on Friday and world No. 24 Diana Shnaider took advantage of it to upset the American 6-4 6-1 – earn her first top-10 win – and set up a quarterfinal meeting against Liudmila Samsonova.
Through the first nine games of the match, not a single break point was seen as Shnaider led 5-4. Then in the ninth game – when Gauff was serving to stay in the first set – Shnaider earned three consecutive set points and converted her third to clinch the opener.
After losing the first set in a heartbreaking way, Gauff got her first break point chance of the match in the third game of the second set but didn’t convert. In the remainder of the match, the top-seeded American didn’t win a single game as Shnaider went on to win the last five games of the second set en route to completing a two-set win.
