New York dominated in the inaugural game of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), defeating Toronto 4-0 on Monday at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Ella Shelton scored the league’s first-ever goal, making history with a shot that gave New York a 1-0 lead with 9:16 left in the first period. The team followed up with three third-period goals that came from Alex Carpenter, Jill Saulnier and Kayla Vespa to close out their first win of the season.

New York and Toronto are among the six teams competing in the PWHL’s inaugural season, along with franchises in Boston, Minnesota, Ottawa and Montreal.
Each team will play a 24-game schedule starting this month. They’ll compete head-to-head a minimum of four times, including twice at home and twice on the road. Games will be played on all seven days of the week, but mostly on Saturdays (22) and Wednesdays (21). There will be international breaks in the schedule in February (no games from Feb. 5 to Feb. 13) and in April for the IIHF Women’s World Championship (no games from March 26 through April 17).
