Nebraska women’s volleyball set to break NCAA record with Memorial Stadium sellout

Nebraska volleyball fans have outdone themselves. The school announced Thursday that it had sold out Memorial Stadium the football stadium with 82,900 available seats for an Aug. 30 event featuring the popular Nebraska women’s team. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Volleyball Day in Nebraska was announced in February. It will feature the five-time national champion Huskers against Nebraska-Omaha in the regular-season opener for both teams.
  • Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State will also face off in a Division II exhibition match.
  • Weather permitting, the August event in Lincoln, Neb., is set to shatter the attendance record for any women’s college sporting event.

Backstory

Nebraska volleyball has sold out more than 300 consecutive matches at the Devaney Center, its 8,000-seat arena on campus. The program has won four of its five national championships under coach John Cook since he took over in 2000.

The university designed the event to break the attendance record for an NCAA volleyball match. The current record is 18,755, set when the Huskers played Wisconsin in Columbus, Ohio for the national title in 2021. Wisconsin set the regular-season NCAA record last year with a crowd of 16,833 for a match against Florida at the Kohl Center in Madison.
