Two weeks into the regular season, there already have been some exciting games and ACC teams that have exceeded expectations. Here is a look at how the ACC teams ranked in the top 20—No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 10 NC State, No. 13 Florida State and No. 17 Notre Dame—have performed to start the season:
No. 9 Virginia Tech Hokies (3-1, 0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech remains the highest-ranked ACC team despite losing to Iowa. It’s hard to punish them for losing to Caitlin Clark, who went for 44 points on the Hokies. Nonetheless, Virginia Tech’s Kitley-centric offense has yielded impressive results so far, a 127 offensive rating to be exact.
Virginia Tech loves to run flex cuts to get Kitley the ball on the low block and, because she demands so much attention, Georgia Amoore has benefited greatly from this action. Amoore is picking up right where she left off in the NCAA Tournament, averaging almost 19 points and nine assists. She makes the pick-and-roll with Kitley look so easy.
Next week, they will face off against the defending champions: the No. 7 LSU Lady Tigers. It will be interesting to see how the Hokies adjust to guarding the pick-and-roll, as Iowa was able to have some success putting Kitley in these actions.
