Playing the second round of Wimbledon for the first time, American Emma Navarro dispatched four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 6-4 6-1.
In the first set, games went with serve until 3-3, when Navarro secured a pivotal break on her first break point, which turned out to be the only one in the entire set. Not long afterwards, Navarro converted her first set point with a deep forehand, wrapping up the set in just 30 minutes.
As the match progressed, Navarro’s dominance grew dramatically in her first-ever meeting with Osaka. The American world No.17, seeded 19th at Wimbledon, swiftly surged to a commanding 4-0 lead in the second set. She eventually sealed the victory with a love break, as Osaka managed to win just one game in the second set.
Navarro’s third-round opponent will be Diana Shnaider, the player she lost to less than a week ago in the semifinals of the Bad Homburg Open, a WTA 500 grass-court tournament in Germany.
