This year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest brings a level of intrigue not seen in nearly a decade — that intrigue being the absence of Joey Chestnut. The 16-time champion will not be participating in the competition due to his partnership with Impossible Foods, and a new winner will be crowned on the men’s side.
On the women’s side, Miki Sudo will look to defend her title won with 39.5 hot dogs last year. Her personal best is 48.5 hot dogs, which she will look to dethrone this year. Geoffrey Esper is the favorite for the men.
Last year, Chestnut took the men’s title with 62 hot dogs, and Esper came in second with just 49. Sudo won by six hot dogs on the women’s side. Nevertheless, for the first time in a long time, there’s opportunity for both competitions to go down to the wire, which usually doesn’t happen with Chestnut in the picture.
