Nashville is ‘great candidate’ for NWSL expansion

Alex Morgan thinks that Nashville would be a great place for a future NWSL expansion team.

The city played host to the second round of SheBelieves Cup games on Sunday, with a crowd of 25,471 turning out in support of the U.S. women’s national team.

“We’ve been here [in Nashville] a couple of times and obviously playing in a soccer-specific stadium is the best-case scenario, having 25,000 [fans] like this where the crowd is energetic and it’s fun,” Morgan said. “The pitch is perfect. It was actually a great game for us. So hopefully there are more NWSL teams and Nashville would be a great candidate for that.”

Nashville may have to wait a little while longer, however. Reports have the NWSL adding teams in Boston, Utah and the San Francisco Bay area, with Utah and San Francisco set to begin play in 2024 and Boston launching its team later.

USWNT forward Megan Rapinoe called Nashville’s atmosphere “the best we’ve had in a long time.”

“Obviously, the fans are amazing here. And that’s great for us,” she said. “That hypes us up and keeps everybody engaged and brings the level of our game, I think, up to another level and Nashville is always a great place to come.”
