Naomi Osaka kicked off her 2025 season with a hard-fought 6-4 6-4 victory over qualifier Lina Glushko in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.
This year’s ASB Classic holds special significance for Osaka. The last time she played this event was eight years ago, in 2017, as a rising teenager ranked just inside the Top 50. Back then, she reached the quarterfinals, defeating Venus Williams via walkover before losing to Ana Konjuh. Facing Lina Glushko, a 24-year-old ranked No. 220, was no walk in the park. Despite the disparity in rankings and experience, Glushko pushed Osaka, showcasing the skills that had earned her two straight-sets wins in the qualifying rounds.
