Washington Mystics training camp is off to an inauspicious start, as the team announced Wednesday that rookie Georgia Amoore suffered an ACL injury during Tuesday’s practice.
Amoore was the sixth pick in this month’s WNBA Draft and finished as one of three players in Division I history to post at least 2,300 points and 800 assists (joining Sabrina Ionescu and Caitlin Clark).
As the Mystics enter an era of rebuilding through the draft, Amoore was poised to be the point guard of the future. The present roster only includes combo guards like Brittney Sykes or young point guards with even less experience than the 24-year-old Amoore.
Amoore missed only one game in college, which spanned four seasons at Virginia Tech and one with Kentucky. She also participated in Kelsey Plum’s annual Dawg Class following the draft.
Washington did not specify that Amoore had suffered an ACL tear, only that “Amoore and the team will examine treatment and rehabilitation options and provide an update as appropriate.”
However, ACL injuries generally require surgery to stabilize the knee, and Amoore would presumably prioritize her long-term health, with the Mystics unlikely to be competitive this season.
