There were two maiden WTA match winners at the Transylvania Open on Monday. Local player Miriam Bulgaru and the Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartunkova advanced to the second round after scoring momentous triumphs for themselves.
Bartunkova, aged 17 and ranked 289th in the world, took out Dayana Yastremska 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 52 minutes in their clash. Bartunkova saved nine of the 12 break points she faced while converting five break points on the Ukrainian’s serve.
She also won 66% points on return on Yastremska’s second serve. Meanwhile, in her match against Turkish qualifier Ipek Oz, the 25-year-old Bulgaru clinched a 7-5, 6-3 win. Bulgaru needed an hour and 56 minutes to complete the match.
Ranked 208th in the world and a wildcard entrant here, Bulgaru won 62% of her first-serve points to Oz’s 54%. She also won 57% of her second-serve points and 52% points on return on her opponent’s second serve.
She converted five break points while saving four of seven break points she faced.
