Millie Bright relishing England captaincy at ‘biggest’ Women’s World Cup

Millie Bright is relishing her new role captaining England at this month’s Women’s World Cup — and has warned her team-mates there will be no let-up as they seek success.

The 29-year-old was announced by head coach Sarina Wiegman as the Lionesses’ vice-captain last April in the lead-up to England’s triumphant European Championship.

A successful spell has seen Bright help oversee a Euros title, a win over the USA in October, a second successive Arnold Clark Cup win and an inaugural Finalissima victory.

But with Arsenal defender and regular captain Leah Williamson ruled out of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand with an anterior cruciate ligament sustained in April, Bright — who had surgery on a knee problem of her own sustained in March — has stepped up to take the armband amid heightened expectation.

Asked how she felt about her new role leading the team on the international stage, Bright said: “I feel grateful to be selected, let alone to be captaining the girls. It is a massive honour.

“But for me, nothing changes, I stay the same… I always lead for the team, that’s just natural to me.
