ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore weren’t whispering plays to anyone but themselves as they watched Michigan’s season opener against East Carolina at Moore’s house.

At times, Harbaugh said, it felt as if the Wolverines’ head coach and offensive coordinator were on the headsets with play caller Kirk Campbell and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, the acting head coach in Michigan’s 30-3 victory.

“It was really a cool thing,” Harbaugh said Monday. “Sherrone and I were both sitting there, like, ‘Time for a play-action pass, let’s run this.’ It was uncanny how many times that’s what Kirk would call or do.”

Harbaugh and Moore, suspended for Saturday’s game following an investigation into alleged recruiting violations, would have preferred to be on the sidelines. The rest of Michigan’s staff felt their absence, with Jay Harbaugh likening it to a holiday dinner without two members of the family. Because they couldn’t all be together, Harbaugh and Moore made the best of it by getting together with their families to watch the game.

“His wife, Kelli, made some sandwiches,” Harbaugh said. “His two daughters were there and my son Johnny. We had a good time. I really loved what I saw out of our team.”
