Michigan State basketball’s Jeremy Fears suffers gunshot wound, undergoes surgery

Michigan State basketball’s Jeremy Fears Jr. was shot in the leg and suffered a non-life-threatening injury that required surgery, the university and coach Tom Izzo said in a Saturday statement.

The shooting occurred early Saturday in Fears’ hometown of Joliet, Illinois.

“Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably,” Izzo said. “While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”

Fears, a former five-star recruit, has played in all 12 games for the 7-5 Spartans. He has averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 assists in 15.3 minutes per game this season.

The 6-foot-2 guard was the top recruit in Illinois per 247Sports and was the first player of the class to commit to Michigan State.

Fears, 18, posted an Instagram story Saturday, which appears to depict him lying in a hospital bed.

“Minor setback,” the caption reads. “We gone be good appreciate yall.”

In a Saturday statement that didn’t mention Fears by name, the Joliet Police Department said officers responded to a residence at 3:44 a.m. where they found two individuals who had been shot, a 19-year-old female and an 18-year-old male.

The statement said the motive and intended target of the shooting are unknown and still under investigation.
