Megan Rapinoe exits NWSL Championship between OL Reign and Gotham FC in third minute with injury

Date:

Megan Rapinoe’s final game came to an early, heartbreaking close only two minutes and 25 seconds into the NWSL Championship match. Stepping in to make a challenge against a Gotham defender with possession, Rapinoe appeared to slip with her right leg buckling underneath her. After a long check with the trainers, Rapinoe was able to get to her feet and walk off the field under her own power, but her night in San Diego was done.

The injury appeared to be one in her right ankle area, but near the back of her leg, suggesting an injury to the Achilles. Watching the game footage, Rapinoe appears to tell Rose Lavelle that it is an Achilles injury.

Before stepping off the field, Gotham FC’s Ali Krieger came over to comfort her for a brief moment. This is also Krieger’s final NWSL match, and the two have been friends for many years. OL Reign forward Bethany Balcer came into the match in the sixth minute.

Gotham FC defeated OL Reign 2-1 to capture the franchise’s first NWSL Championship.
