Matildas World Cup: Expected crowd, attendance for Ireland match at Stadium Australia

Records are expected to be broken when the Matildas play their FIFA Women’s World Cup opener against Ireland on Thursday night. 

Tickets for the game at Stadium Australia are officially sold out, with a bumper crowd forecast as Australia kick-off their home tournament in Sydney.

There is a little bit of confusion regarding the capacity of Stadium Australia, so it’s difficult to predict how many fans will be present to watch the Matildas open their World Cup campaign

FIFA have reconfigured the 83,500-seater stadium – notably making room for a prominent media tribune – which has reduced the amount of seats available.

The adjusted capacity has been listed as 75,784 on the official Women’s World Cup site but is also listed as 69,314 on a separate FIFA site.

To be safe, we will go with the lowest common denominator and therefore expect approximately 69,000 fans at the match.

This would smash the previous record for a Matildas crowd of 50,629 spectators, which was set just last week at Australia’s friendly against France in Melbourne.
