Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with two forms of cancer, in her throat and breast tissue. Fortunately, this horrible news comes with a ray of hope, as the tennis legend claims that her prognosis is good and that her treatment is due to start next week in New York City.
The 66-year-old Navratilova first discovered a lump in her neck during the WTA Finals in Fort Worth in November 2022. When she had it checked, the biopsy results pointed to an early-stage throat cancer. As she was undergoing tests on her throat, the unrelated stage-one breast cancer was discovered.
“This double whammy is serious but still fixable, and I’m hoping for a favorable outcome,” said Navratilova, who won a total of 59 Grand Slam titles in her illustrious career. “It’s going to stink for a while but I’ll fight with all I have got.”
The word ‘despair’ doesn’t exist in Navratilova’s vocabulary. In 2010, she was faced with a breast cancer diagnosis for the first time and she bravely approached the health problem. The tumour was surgically removed.
Navratilova has won dozens of big battles in her life and we are sure that this latest one will be just another challenge that the member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame will successfully overcome. (source: WTA, photo: Jimmie48)
