Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title after beating Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4 in the final.
The 24-year-old from the Czech Republic, who lost the French Open final as a 19-year-old, succeeded where so many have failed this tournament — she broke Jabeur’s serve, again and again.
Going into the match the Tunisian No 6 had won 90 per cent of her service games. In the final she only won 40 per cent (four out of 10).
Vondrousova trailed in each set but won the last four games of the first set, then the last three games of what proved the decider.
Her returning was just too much for Jabeur, who was aiming to become the first north African and first Arabic player to win a grand slam title.
It means the 28-year-old has now lost in each of her three grand-slam final appearances adding to defeats at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
Vondrousova, who had wrist surgery last year, said: “I don’t really know what’s happening now – it’s an amazing feeling.
“After everything I’ve been through, I was in a cast this time last year (after wrist injury), it’s amazing that I can be here now.
“I don’t really know (how i’ve done it). The comebacks aren’t easy. You never know what to expect. I was playing small tournaments…
