Maria Sakkari is hinting that Stefanos Tsitsipas is not really planning on playing mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics as the top-ranked Greek female tennis player publicly revealed her views by stating that not seeing them team up in Paris would be “unfortunate” and publicly urging the top-ranked Greek tennis player to change his mind.
On paper, Greece has one of the most attractive and strongest mixed doubles teams in the likes of world No. 6 Sakkari and two-time Grand Slam finalist Tsitsipas. And they have been occasionally playing mixed doubles since 2019, mostly when representing Greece in team competitions.
After Sakkari and Tsitsipas agreed to represent Greece at the United Cup in January and to again play mixed doubles together, it was a major indication that they would also play together at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
But Sakkari – who is representing Greece at this week’s Billie Jean King Cup in Portugal – made a surprising revelation as she claims Tsitsipas is not that keen on playing mixed doubles with her at the Olympics. When revealing that, Sakkari also sent a message to Tsitsipas and explained to him why they just cannot miss out on a chance to team up for the Paris Olympics.
