Maria Sakkari has hired a new coach and it’s Sergi Bruguera, who won the 2019 Davis Cup title with Rafael Nadal and also had a partnership with Alexander Zverev and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, via Vicky Georgatou of SDNA.
After splitting with her coach of six years Tom Hill, Sakkari hired ex-coach of Venus Williams and Jessica Pegula, David Witt. But just three months into their partnership, the 28-year-old Greek decided to stop working with Witt, who had two very long stints with Williams and Pegula in the past.
Just before the French Open, Sakkari spoke very highly of Witt. But after suffering a shock French Open first-round loss to Varvara Gracheva and also getting dismantled by Victoria Azarenka in her first grass match of the season in Berlin, the ninth-ranked Greek decided it was time for a change.
And after also losing in the Bad Homburg first round and only making the Wimbledon third round, Sakkari has found a replacement for the remainder of 2024.
