Manchester United will broadcast the club’s Women’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain after all, having initially said in an incorrect club statement that UEFA rules prevented them from doing so.
On Tuesday, the club released details of their second-round first-leg fixture against PSG and stated: “MUTV cannot show the game live due to UEFA’s broadcast rights.” At the time of publication, the wording remains the same.
This caused confusion among fans on social media, who feared they would be denied the opportunity to watch their team’s first outing in Europe.
But, after being asked by The Athletic why they were not planning to broadcast the match, United realised their club statement was incorrect and there were no such restrictions in place.
The Women’s Champions League media rights are centralised as of the group stages, which means rights to the qualifying rounds sit with the home clubs. Teams have the right to produce the games themselves on their own websites.
Arsenal, as well as many other clubs, broadcast their qualifying rounds this year and last year on their in-house media channels.
