Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood says she was “shocked” by the departure of head coach Gareth Taylor.
The announcement of Taylor’s exit on Monday came just five days before City play Chelsea in the Women’s League Cup final on Saturday. Former MLS and City coach Nick Cushing will take charge of the team for the rest of the season.
Greenwood, who is recovering from a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury, described the last 24 hours as “a bit of a whirlwind”.
“A lot to process, a lot to digest,” the England international told media on Tuesday. “My role as captain is to bring the team together and make sure the focus remains the same which is on the final on Saturday and the run of games we’ve got coming up.
“I was shocked by the news, of course. I wasn’t expecting that news yesterday but it’s business and this is football. I think the focus quickly shifted to what’s next, what is important to the team and that’s the final on Saturday.”
City have a significant block of games across all four competitions coming up which makes the timing of this decision surprising.
Greenwood said: “That’s where the trust comes into it with the club on their decision and the timing. I have no influence on that.”
