Man United official calls for stronger financial rules in women’s football: ‘We can’t replicate men’s game’

A Manchester United official has called for stronger financial regulation in the women’s game to stop the gap between clubs widening.

Francesca Whitfield, United’s head of group planning, wants a European-wide stance taken and says action should be taken sooner than it was in the men’s game because “the game is in a different space”.

When asked about implementing stronger financial regulations, similar to in the men’s game, Whitfield told the European Club Association (ECA) Women’s Football Summit in London on Monday: “We should be looking to adopt financial regulation much earlier in the women’s game than we did in the men’s game to stop that gap widening.

“Currently in the WSL we have a salary cap system which is 40 per cent of revenue but that includes parent club income, meaning the larger clubs naturally benefit from shirt deals on the men’s side and that’s creating a gap that is affecting the product.
