Mallory Swanson, the leading scorer for the U.S. women’s national team, suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury Saturday during a friendly against Ireland in Austin, Texas.
Swanson was tackled about 40 minutes into the match and immediately appeared to be in distress. She was later carted off the field and was taken to a nearby hospital, The Washington Post’s Steven Goff.

An extended absence by Swanson could be a major blow to the USWNT. In five 2023 contests, she has scored a team-leading seven goals and been the team’s best attacker. The women’s World Cup begins in mid-July.
