In what proved to be a nail-biting women’s wheelchair race, Australian paralympian Madison de Rozario has won the London Marathon 2023 in the women’s wheelchair field.
Four racers battled it out, neck and neck right up until the final stretch: de Rozario, Manuela Schar, Catherine Debrunner and Susannah Scaroni.
Schar, who won the London Marathon in 2021 as well as 2017, tried to pull out in front and take the lead on multiple occasions, but the group of four stuck together until the final exciting moments where de Rozario and Schar battled it out in a sprint finish.
De Rozario has multiple Paralympic titles as well as golds in the Commonwealth Games and the World Para Athletics Championships. She won the London Marathon in 2018, making this her second victory.
For a fifth time – and for the third consecutive year – Swiss athlete Marcel Hug won the men’s wheelchair race. British athlete David Weir crossed the finish line in fifth place, completing his 24th London Marathon.
