Liverpool’s Leanne Kiernan to make return to training after eight months on sidelines

Liverpool striker Leanne Kiernan is set to make her return to squad training today after eight months on the sidelines.

Kiernan, whose goals were fundamental to Liverpool’s return to the Women’s Super League, picked up an ankle injury in an opening day of the season win over Chelsea.

Manager Matt Beard has said he does not expect Kiernan to feature against Chelsea on Wednesday night but she could potentially pick up minutes as Liverpool host Manchester City at Prenton Park on Sunday.

Kiernan’s return to training will not only come as a massive boost to Liverpool but also for Ireland who have qualified for this summer’s World Cup.

“You make a lot of progress and you have a setback and mentally that’s draining,” Beard said of Kiernan’s journey. “But Leanne’s a bubbly character. She’s took everything in her stride, every setback. She’s had her head down, worked hard, got herself back in. And I’m just delighted. It will be great lift for us and for the team to have her back out training with us.”

The boss also revealed club captain Niamh Fahey is also set to return to training this afternoon. Meanwhile, Meg Campbell and Yana Daniels will both miss Wednesday’s match at Kingsmeadow but the former could be involved this weekend.
