Week 8 marks the fall of Georgia back to the last team in the SEC, right behind Arkansas. Can we talk about the dichotomy of being last in the conference by 18th in the country? So bizarre to think about. Anyway, the Gymdogs did have the second lowest team total of the year last week at Auburn due to counting a fall on beam. Honestly, I don’t see much of a need to panic though. This is a relatively young team that has avoided the typical Georgia beam-tastrophe that’s made the Dogs notorious, so I’d say things are going quite well. Josie Angeny seems to finally be coming into her own, while Haley De Jong holds down the fort in the all around competition. From the underclassmen, the standout performer to me is Naya Howard. She’s cool, calm and collected, posting big scores week after week like it’s her job. Also be on the lookout for JaFree Scott’s unique skills on beam.
Arkansas got beam back on track last week, led by a huge 9.975 from Norah Flatley. However, it was floor where the Gymbacks had to count a mistake. Speaking of young teams, I’m impressed with how this roster has performed this season, especially on bars where the majority of lineup is newcomers. Be on the lookout for Frankie Price and Leah Smith on floor. Oh, and Lauren Williams…
