Midfielder Lindsey Horan and forward Alex Morgan have been named as the U.S. women’s national team captains ahead of the 2023 World Cup by coach Vlatko Andonovski.
Horan will wear the armband when the two players are on the field at the same time.
The U.S. captaincy role had been left vacant after Becky Sauerbrunn was ruled out of the tournament with a foot injury.
“We have a lot of leaders on this team among the young players and the veteran players, and among those, Lindsey and Alex have vast experience in big games, and they understand what it takes to win at the highest levels,” said Andonovski. “They are ultimate professionals and understand all the factors that go into having a united and motivated team. I know they will represent us well on and off the field at the World Cup.”
Horan has captained the U.S. on nine occasions and was first given the armband against Korea Republic in October 2021, having been honored for her 100th senior cap before the game. She most recently captained the side during February’s 1-0 win over Japan at the 2023 SheBelieves Cup.
The 29-year-old Lyon midfielder has been capped 128 times and this summer’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand will be her second World Cup.
