The WNBA Finals are finally here, and the series has the makings of a good one.
It’s the New York Liberty vs. Las Vegas Aces in the matchup of all matchups. The league’s latest two MVPs, Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson, battle for the most important title of the season: a championship.
The Aces won last year’s championship as the league’s lone superteam. Once again led by Wilson, Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray, they’ve only gotten better, setting a WNBA record of 34 wins in the regular season. They’re trying to become the league’s first team to win back-to-back championships since the Sparks in 2022.
While Las Vegas is the favorite, WNBA’s newest superteam is on its heels. With Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones, 2021 MVP, at the helm of the Liberty, they seem like the only ones who could take down the defending champs. They are, actually. New York is the only team to beat Las Vegas multiple times this season — it earned three wins over Becky Hammon and company. in April, including a victory in the Commissioner’s Cup game.
The Aces will have a huge advantage though, hosting Games 1 and 2 of the Finals along with Game 5 if necessary.
Let the games begin.
