Liberty headed to WNBA Finals after eliminating Sun: How Laney played key role for New York

The New York Liberty will take on the Las Vegas Aces in the 2023 WNBA Finals after New York closed out its semifinal series against the Connecticut Sun in four games Sunday.

  • Recently crowned league MVP Breanna Stewart led the Liberty with 27 points in the 87-84 win, while Jonquel Jones put up a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Betnijah Laney added 21 points and seven rebounds for New York.
  • Connecticut had five players score in double figures, led by Alyssa Thomas’ 17-point, 15-rebound, 11-assist triple-double.
  • The Liberty haven’t played in the finals since 2002, when they lost to the Los Angeles Sparks. The Aces are the defending champions.

It wasn’t easy, by any means, as Connecticut overcame an 8-point fourth-quarter deficit to level the score at 69 apiece with just over five minutes to play. But down the stretch of Game 4, New York leaned on its star bigs to produce, and they did.

Stewart scored nine of her team-high 27 points in the fourth quarter, and Jones scored 11 of her 25 points in the game’s final ten minutes.
