Lia Walti injury: Aggie Beever-Jones apologises for ‘reckless challenge’ on Arsenal player

Date:

Aggie Beever-Jones has apologised for a “reckless challenge” that left Arsenal’s Lia Walti with a potentially serious injury.

Beever-Jones was sent off for the tackle – a first red card of her career – in the second-half as Everton lost 4-1 in the Women’s Super League on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old, who is on loan from Chelsea, was visibly upset as she left the pitch before Walti was taken from the field on a stretcher.

“I struggle to put into words how upset I am at injuring another player. Most importantly, I meant no harm whatsoever to Lia Walti,” she said in a post on Instagram.

“I’m just not the type of person that would intentionally hurt another player. I lost control of the ball and was over eager to try and win it back. My lunge resulted in a bad but unintentionally reckless challenge.”

Swiss international Walti, who signed a new contract with the club last week, moved to support Beever-Jones on social media following the game.

“Football is a contact sport, these injuries unfortunately happen and are part of our game,” she wrote.

“No need for any hate or bad comments towards Agnes Beever-Jones, please. Thank you!”
