Leylah Fernandez enjoyed many things on the court with Bianca Fernandez this past week in Toronto but her favorite was her younger sister being the first-ever player who was able to hit her with “a reality check” on the court.
The Fernandez sisters, who were given a doubles main draw wildcard for their home tournament, didn’t disappoint the organizers nor the fans after making the semifinal before losing 2-6 4-6 to No. 1 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routhliffe. But before losing in their maiden WTA semifinal, Leylah, 22, and 20-year-old Bianca definitely made some noise after clinching a 6-3 4-6 11-9 win over Catherine Harrison and Ashlyn Krueger, as well as a 7-5 5-7 12-10 win over Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai.
The quarterfinal win over Mladenovic and Zhang was particularly impressive since those two players are multiple Grand Slam champions in doubles and have been ranked inside the top-2 in the competition. During that match, the Fernandez duo saved a match point en route to earning a dramatic win – but it happened only after Bianca honestly told Leylah on the court where she was making mistakes.
